Automatically Populating a Forum with REAL Topics!!
Add to Favourites

Ever come across a web-site which has a forum, and then you look at the date of the last post and it was about 8 months ago? Not good is it. It doesn’t exactly entice you to post, and it makes it look like the site has no community and little to it.
There are solutions to this, such as web-sites such as forumlaunch.com – where you pay them hundreds of dollars, and then their team of researchers get posting on your web-site in order to get it started. In a way, it’s a great site because it’s getting real people posting real topics – but if you’re stingy like me, why pay out when you can have equally relevant posts on your forum for free! Similarly, it updates constantly, the subjects are what YOU specify….
I’ve come across a really good tool called Ico-Content, which is a plugin for SMF Forums (similar to phpBB, but better). Once installed, you literally create the forums that you want on your site via the admin panel, and then you pop in the keywords that are appropriate to that particular board. For instance, if you were to do a form on “English football”, you’d use keywords such as “england, football, soccer, premiership, fa” etc.
Then the plugin goes out and consults Yahoo Answers. Now, if you have never come across Yahoo Answers before, it is an excellent site, which has lots of people around the world asking questions about literally everything… and then a load of other users subsequently come back with answers and helpful responses. It’s fantastic.
The plugin then converts the original and subsequent posts about the chosen subject into posts on your forum! It will populate your forum slowly, every X minutes (you tell it what to do). It gives all users a unique user name, tallies up their number of posts, gives them a unique email address, and more. Basically, it makes your site looks like it is being used a lot… when really, it isn’t. However, thanks to this tool – it will be!!
Stop Press: Now unfortunately this plugin seems to not be available from Ico-Content anymore – the company don’t seem to exist! However there are other similar plugins now available on the internet. If you search well, you will find! Good luck.
