If you’ve never heard of RentACoder before, you have now. Recently, I’ve been playing around a lot with Magento, building a custom theme for it. As mentioned before, sometimes it can be pretty damn tricky – however, if there are any problems you encounter, you might want to give RentACoder a go, because on this site, there are a vast area of web developers who are experienced in Magento Theme Design – so why not outsource it to them?

For users who have a Magento store, but do not want to pay over the odds for a ready-made theme design – this is the place to go, as coders from across the globe are waiting in the wings for you to post your project. Once you do, they will come in with their bids. Most of the designers on there are incredibly experienced, and you can even view their feedback and their portfolio of recent work too, ensuring you will definitely pick the right person!

On previous projects, we have utilised a lot of Indian/Russian/Bangladeshi people via this, and they are amazing at what they do! Even if you have an OS-Commerce store, ZenCart, or even some commercial software like Actinic, theses boys (and girls) do a great job, and they do it on time!

Although some people consider it to be quite a rigmorol posting projects (there are a number of pages to go through), once you place your ad, the bids pour in within seconds. You specify the criteria, the timescale, the budget – and then you can pick the “winning” bidder. Once this has been done, all you have to do is merely sort out payment metods via the Rentacoder system, and then just sit back and let them get on with the work while you make money other ways…

During the project, you can also communicate with these peeps via Skype/MSN as it is generally easier, although beware that Rentacoder do not encourage this, as they want all coders to be paid through their systems and not privately. Anyhow, once you’ve heard back from the designer and you are satisfied with the work they’ve done, you simply release the funds to them via the Rentacoder interface. The result? Everyone is happy, you save time, they get a healthy amount of money, and your Magento store looks amazing (and also individual).

Give them a go!

    Hi Sam

Just out of interest, as I’m posting a small magento project on rentacoder – I assume you have to give them access to your hosting cpanel and the admin section of your site – do you just have to trust them with this access level, or is there anything you can do to make you feel more secure?

    Cheers,

    Dan

Hi Dan, if I were you I’d create a different CPanel user account and FTP account for the coder. Most of them are very good moral people, but you never quite know. You should be able to set what they can and cant access from there.

In terms of the site Admin, it is very difficult. Most of them are legit, and they’ll 100% need access to complete your task – but then it is in their own interest to work fairly and honestly, as their ratings depend upon the quality of their work – and alot of these people have careers made out of this site.

Any extra sensitive information can be removed and restored… but usually you should have no problems at all :)

    Sam.

Thanks Sam, I think the only way to do it is with someone who’s done a lot of projects with good feedback. Like you say, it’s in their interest to work fairly and honestly.
