Don’t Dial 118 118! It Is Bloody Expensive…!

I checked my phone bill recently (for the first time in my life I think) – and then I wondered how every month it was seemingly always about ten quid above the standard price I was paying. After I while of searching, I found the culprit….

When Directory Enquiries 192 was deregulated, although several services were launched, there were three main players within the market, one of them being the 118 118 service which is run by The Number Ltd. This service today remains the most popular choice mainly down to a lot of well-remembered advrtising, with BT’s own service coming in a close second.

However, what people don’t realise is that, despite being the most popular – these companies are bloody expensive! Despite the adverts telling us how good 118 118, it really isn’t anything “special”, considering that most of the other less well known directory enquiries companies use the same telephone database… and often, the same call-centres!

For example, you’re on a UK landline and you want to make THREE phone number enquiries to 118 118. The cost? Well you’re paying 69p just for the priviledge of making the phone call in the first place – and then 19p per minute thereafter – so assuming it takes a minute for a single enquiry, you’ve just clocked up over £1.20. Similarly, your phone call will cost even more if you then ask to be connected to your desired number – so never do this!

However, if you dial 118 848 and also make three enquiries – you pay only 40p flat rate – a bit of a cost saving!

Even better, if you want to make just one or two enquiries, the best number to call is 118 226 – as this service, privded by a company caleld the GM Group (and again, they use BT’s database) – and the cost is 23.5p!

Also be advised that there are plenty of free services available that are supported by advertising. These can be seen on the fantastic Money Saving Expert website. Aswell as this, there are also some qukick-to-access WAP services that can be utilised from your mobile phone.

It just astounds me that so many people (including me) throw so much cash down the drain when they use 118 118! They are the more prominent service, yes they can text you jokes, and yes they can text you where to get a pizza in Bromley….. but they are neccessarily the best for your pocket!

had to use the mobile to get a number from 118118, first number was wrong cost £4 and then rang back for the correct number and mentioned first was wrong, cost another £2.14 and no refund for wrong information supplied. So £6.14 for an enquiry, Rip Off Britain comes to mind
