The Mary Shelley – Bournemouth Town Centre

How many times have I said “good old Wetherspoons” in my lifetime? Probably too many times. The Mary Shelley (formerly Bar Med) is one of these chain pubs, and it has fastly become the number one meeting point on nights out in Bournemouth, mainly due to its trusty low prices and extensive food menu.
The pub itself is very new. It has been done up really well, with lots of luxurious sofas, good tables and chairs, excellent wall art (yes, wall art in a Wetherspoons), and the addition of a number of plasma TV’s dotted around the place.
The bar is long and curvacious, and if you’re quick off the mark, you can usually get served within a couple of minutes, even on a busy night. They usually have a number of members of staff working at various points of the bar, and if you establish the eye contact early, you’re on to a winner!

The range of drinks at these pubs is good, with a number of draught ales and lagers – and similarly, the selection of wines, spirits and liquors is admirable.
What I like about this place is that it encompasses many things a bar/club should be, however, due to the low prices, it seems to attract all sorts of punters, from the elderly tramp to the chav youths. This can somewhat diminish the quality of what is an excellent and trusty drinking abode. The music isn’t too loud, the seats are comfortable, and you’ll have a lot of loose change at the end of the night. One thing unfortunately remains though… you’ll still have to dodge the “freshen up” man whilst having a pee. Pain!
