As we have documented before, it’s always easier to go with a specialist Magento Hosting company such as Simple Helix, however, if you have your own dedicated server with a number of web-sites on it already - you’re going to want to initially check whether its’ specification is good enough for Magento.

Well, we’ve got a tool which will work it out for you - all you need to do is unzip it and run it. But firstly, I thought I’d tell you the exact requirements of the new powerhouse in E-Commerce…

Supported Operating Systems:
- Linux x86, x86-64

Supported Web Servers:
- Apache 1.3.x
- Apache 2.0.x
- Apache 2.2.x

Supported Browsers:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and above
- Mozilla Firefox 2.0 and above
- Apple Safari 2.x
- Adobe Flash browser plug-in should be installed

PHP Compatibility:
- 5.2.0 and above
- Required extensions:
PDO_MySQL
simplexml
mcrypt
hash
GD
DOM
conv
SOAP (if Webservices API is to be used)
- Safe_mode off
- Memory_limit 32M or more

MySQL:
- 4.1.20 or newer
- InnoDB storage engine

SSL:
- If HTTPS is used to work in the admin, SSL certificate should be valid.

Server - hosting - setup:
- Ability to run scheduled jobs (crontab) with PHP 5
- Ability to override options in .htaccess file

If you’re not confident that your server is up to the standard (or even if you are), you may well find it handy to download the Magento Server Checker - this ZIP file simply needs to be Unzipped on your computer.  Within it is a PHP file, and just upload it to the root of your website, and then try to access the file through a browser..

eg: www.yourdomain.com/magento-check.php

..and there will be your answer!  Remember, if it doesn’t wrk out, just use Simple Helix!
