Update on My Magento Progress

I thought I’d take this opportunity to inform regular blog readers about my personal progress with Magento. Like most people, I’m still learning all about it, and slowly but surely we’re pulling it all together.

If you’ve perused my blog you’ll probably realise I work as web developer for a company called Bright Light Media. We specialise in E-Commerce stores, and currently have a plethora of websites which are Number 1 in their niche for various online products. These sites have grew and developed over time, with some utilising OS-Commerce, some on Actinic, and others on different web platforms… all very well, but it makes managing them a logistical nightmare.

If my manager comes to me and wants me to do a profit report from June 2008, I’ve got to load up three different systems - that doesn’t make sense. This is one of the reasons why we’re switching to Magento - multiple sites can be operated from the one Admin panel. Other advantages to Magento can also be noted in my previous blog posts…

So, the design has begun… I’ve been playing with the template which is going to power all of our sites, and the individual graphics have been outsourced. We have successfully designed a payment module for Secpay (now called Paypoint), and the products have been added. Tax classes have been sorted, discounts applied, and no we’re in a stage of testing the look and feel, ensuring that our sites take money - and more to the point, are ready for launch!

We’re looking at August 2008 for a Magento launch of all our sites, so you’ll have to check back and see what we’ve done. In the meantime though I definitely recommend NuBlue for your Magento hosting - these guys are Magento specialists, and if you get either shared or dedicated server hosting, I’m pretty confident you’ll be very happy with them.
